Grantley Haynes began his interest with crack cocaine whilst on tour in the 1980s, when he witnessed the trail of misery left in the lives of users, families and their community, as well as the short-term highs that seduced those addicted, noticing how closely related heaven and hell could be. He had yet to learn that help or treatment would lie in one’s ability to manage the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of the person being treated and the resolve of treatment availability. This story follows the Wheeler Street Crack Outreach team and the development of their pioneering approach to working with users at a time when the name crack would cause fear, and the presentation of users caused most hearts to beat faster. This team responded with understanding. In this book, Grantley reveals extraordinary new details, dispels myths, and highlights the most dramatic elements of his years in developing the team, delivering the Birmingham crack cocaine strategy, his time at Hodge Hill constituency, and his contribution as a non-executive director at the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse.
