Creating Mirrors and Makeup (The Musical) was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I’ve ever embarked on. The idea came from my desire to help young artists who hadn’t had formal training in drama, singing, or dancing. I wanted to provide them with an opportunity to grow in a group setting, guided by those who had already walked the path.

Working alongside Rem Conway, we developed a unique story, using songs from My Boyz Beatz as the musical foundation. Our goal was to train the cast not just to perform but to understand what it means to be an artist—how to cast, act, and sing simultaneously. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. We pushed each young person to see their character within themselves, which was an important part of their journey.

The cast – made up of talented individuals from Northfield Youth Service and Wheeler Street – worked incredibly hard, learning the script, developing their characters, and preparing for a live performance in front of 400 people. The process was challenging, but seeing their growth and the final performance made it all worth it.

The storyline of Mirrors and Makeup focuses on a young girl who struggles with low self-esteem but discovers her hidden talent for singing. Despite not fitting the typical image of a star, she enters a competition, only to be betrayed by a deceptive friend. With the support of a boy from school, she confronts the betrayal on stage, and in a moment of unity, the judges suggest they sing together. The message here is clear: collaboration and resilience can help overcome even the toughest challenges.

This production is more than just a musical; it’s a reflection of real-life struggles faced by many in the British Reggae music scene and beyond. It highlights the importance of mentorship, professional support, and staying true to oneself in the face of adversity.
